1 Pedestrian and 1 Officer Hurt in San Jose Crash on Mission Street

SAN JOSE, CA (June 8, 2020) – Tuesday night, Yuridia Ochoa was shot and arrested after a pedestrian crash on Mission Street.

Just an hour after the city’s temporary curfew, around 9:30 p.m., the police continue to break up the fifth night of downtown protest for George Floyd’s death. Two motorcycle officers attempted to stop a silver sedan doing doughnuts across City Hall.

However, the sedan fled and drove north. Afterward, he struck a woman riding or walking with an electric scooter near the intersection. The police began the chase for about a mile and a half to East Mission Street and North Eighth Street. The area was just next to Raymond J. Bernal Memorial Park.

As the police continue the chase, the sedan struck and totaled one of the police motorcycles. The crash also caused one police officer to fall to the ground.

Then, when the sedan entered the East Mission Street dead ends, it started backing up toward the second motorcycle officer. Fortunately, the officer managed to get off the bike while ordering the driver to stop.

The officer fired a shot and hit the driver’s shoulder. The authorities then arrested the suspect, 23-year-old Yuridia Ochoa.

First, responders took her to the hospital for treatment of injuries. The officers will book Yuridia Ochoa into the Santa Clara County jail once released from the hospital.

Meanwhile, the involved pedestrian sustained a head injury, a broken ankle, and abrasions. Furthermore, the motorcycle struck by the suspect didn’t suffer serious injuries.

California Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents are incidents in which someone walking or crossing a road is injured by a vehicle striking them.

If you’re a driver, make sure to scan the road 1/2 mile to a full mile ahead to the lookout or recognize potential hazards in time. Our bodies weren’t designed to travel at 50mph. We were designed for speeds of less than 10mph, thus you need to learn to consciously break that instinct and focus farther ahead.

On the other hand, if you’re a pedestrian, always make sure to practice safety precautions as well. While car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.

“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents, but the pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
