Julian George Dead, Franky Provencio Arrested in Pomona Car Crash
POMONA, CA (May 8, 2019) – A child was killed in a DUI car crash on North White Avenue late Tuesday afternoon, near West McKinley Avenue.
The child was later identified as 6-year-old Julian Anthony George and the driver was reported to be his father, Peter George.
A Pomona police officer witnessed the head-on collision near the Pomona Fairplex just before 4:30 p.m. on White Avenue between McKinley Avenue and Arrow Highway, authorities said.
According to police, a blue GMC Yukon swerved over the center divider on White Avenue and traveled into southbound traffic, hitting a gold Ford Ranger head-on.
Julian was sitting in a rear seat of one of the involved vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene. However, he was not secured in a child safety seat. State law requires kids under 8 years old or under 4 feet 9 inches tall to be in a safety seat, police said.
According to a GoFundMe set up for the family, Peter and his son Julian were on their way to a pet shop after school to get a new fish.
Police say they are looking into the possibility of a DUI incident and that beer bottles were found near the blue Yukon.
The two drivers were transported and treated for injuries at a nearby hospital. Peter George was reported to be in critical condition.
Prosecutors issued an arrest warrant Thursday for Franky Provencio of Pomona, who remained hospitalized due to injuries he suffered. The suspect was driving on a suspended license and was already on probation for a 2018 DUI conviction at the time of the crash, officials said. Because of his prior DUI conviction, prosecutors elected to charge Provencio with murder.
He also faces charges of DUI causing death with a prior conviction, possession of a controlled substance and violating his probation, police said.
Witnesses say a good Samaritan was also injured running toward the crash trying to save the child.
