Andrew Schefelker Killed in Major Accident Involving 131 Vehicles on 41 Freeway in Neenah

Chain-Reaction Pileup in Neenah Kills One and Injures 71 Others

 
NEENAH, WI (February 24, 2019) – One person was killed and 71 others were injured following a chain-reaction pileup involving 131 vehicles Sunday morning in Neenah.
 
The fatal crash happened around 11:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes of 41 Freeway at Highway G. Cars, pickups and semitrailers smashed together and sandwiched underneath each other.
 
Ambulances traveled the wrong way on southbound 41 Freeway to reach injured people as first responders from several communities rushed to help. Injured victims were taken to hospitals in Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay and Neenah.
 
It took several hours to move the injured to hospitals. In addition, the uninjured victims in the accident were moved to warming shelters. An escort moved an estimated 500 vehicles that were stopped on the highway to alternative routes
 
One of the involved drivers, a 30-year-old Andrew Schefelker of Oshkosh, was killed in the crash. He was a Science teacher in a Wisconsin school district.
 
71 other people were injured from the crash. Most of the injuries were minor, with 66 patients treated at hospitals and released, while five people were admitted for further treatment.
 
The freeway was shut down from Breezewood Lane in Neenah to Highway 76 in Oshkosh in both directions. And the southbound traffic of 41 Freeway was closed at Highway 10 with traffic rerouted to Highway 76.
 
Authorities were telling people to stay off the roads because travel was practically impossible. Driving conditions were difficult in other parts of the state.
 
The freeway did not reopen until 3:00 a.m. Monday.
