America Fernandez and Ricardo Isais Injured in Pedestrian Accident on Highway 65 Near Sequoia Drive
EXETER, CA (June 5, 2019) – Two people suffered injuries following last Wednesday’s pedestrian crash on Highway 65, near Sequoia Drive.
To begin, the crash unfolded around 1:00 p.m. First responders arrived to the area shortly after receiving multiple dispatch calls.
According to reports, a Jeep struck 18-year-old America Fernandez and her boyfriend, Ricardo Isais, in a crosswalk.
Paramedics airlifted Fernandez to Kaweah Delta Medical Center before transferring her to Fresno’s Community Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Fernandez suffered broken legs, a fractured pelvis and skull, four broken ribs, a pierced lung and internal bleeding.
Isais also suffered minor injuries in the collision and he is expected to fully recover.
Furthermore, family and friends say the Exeter Union High School senior and salutatorian will miss the opportunity to walk and receive her diploma. However, she plans to attend Point Loma in the fall.
Moreover, reports also say the stretch of the road has a 55-mph speed limit. Yet, it’s currently unclear what speed the Jeep had been traveling at the time of the accident.
Investigators ruled out drugs and alcohol as possible factors. An investigation still currently remains ongoing at this time.
A GoFundMe page is available for anyone wanting to help the family with Fernandez’s medical costs.
Drivers and pedestrians alike are encouraged to be more aware of their surroundings. This is especially important areas such as intersections, parking lots and neighborhoods.
