Woman Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver on 5 Freeway near Bow Hill Rest Area
SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (November 20, 2019) – A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Wednesday morning in Skagit County.
The fatal incident happened around 1:17 a.m. on southbound 5 Freeway near the Bow Hill Rest area.
According to the Washington State Patrol, a 53-year old Tonya Pearson of Burlington was walking in the southbound lanes of the freeway when an unknown vehicle struck her.
Troopers say the driver did not stop and the woman was later struck by a second vehicle, a 2016 commercial vehicle and trailer being driven by 46-year old Jason Merrill of Mariposa, California. That driver stopped and called for help.
Arriving units pronounced Pearson dead at the scene as a result of her injuries.
All freeway lanes were closed for a few hours for the investigation but have since reopened.
At this time, the hit-and-run driver remains at large. Authorities encouraged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with information.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Tonya Pearson. We hope that the investigation of authorities will end up bringing justice wherever it is due.
