Steven Gessner Fatally Struck by Driver on North 83rd Avenue Near West Shangri-La Road
PEORIA, AZ (November 19, 2019) — A 14-year-old boy died Friday morning when a driver in a minivan struck him on North 83rd Avenue near West Shangri-La Road.
According to reports, the incident ensued around 8 a.m. Steven Elijah Gessner, known as Eli to his closest peers, died when a driver in a minivan, traveling northbound on North 83rd Avenue, struck him as he attempted to walk westbound in the crosswalk.
Police determined that the crosswalk lights had been flashing at the time of the accident. Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed Gessner, a freshman, to a local hospital with serious injuries before he died moments later.
The unidentified driver stayed at the scene and remained fully cooperative with the investigation. Although impairment does not appear to be a factor, authorities are investigating speed and distraction.
As of Friday, neither an arrest nor a citation has been made. A GoFundMe page is listed for anyone who’d like to help his family.
