Rick Doan Dies in Interstate 880 Pedestrian Accident [San Leandro, CA]

San Leandro, CA (July 31, 2021) – On Friday, 52-year-old Rick Doan of San Leandro, died in a pedestrian accident on Interstate 880.

The deadly crash took place at around 2:30 a.m. near the Winton Avenue exit in Hayward.

The authorities said Doan parked his SUV in the middle of the freeway, opened his car door, and went out of the vehicle.

That’s when Doan was struck and killed by the hit-and-run driver.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating why Doan parked his vehicle in the middle of the freeway.

“We didn’t find anything that was mechanically wrong with it. As we said the vehicle was still running. At this time we don’t know why the vehicle was stopped,” said CHP Officer Dustin Kennerley.

Moreover, Kennerley said Doan was getting out of his vehicle when he was sideswiped by the suspect’s vehicle. The force of the crash bent back Doan’s driver’s side door and threw him 300 feet.

Authorities say the suspect’s vehicle likely has front and right side damage.
