Phelan, CA (July 22, 2021) – Thursday evening, Ollie and Maggie Hoffmann died in a head-on crash on State Route 18 and Hacienda Road.

The fatal crash in Phelan happened at about 6:13 pm, on July 22, 2021.

San Bernardino County Firefighters responded and located a white Ford Ranger truck and a black 2000 Subaru Impreza, both with major front-end damage and blocking the roadway.

Firefighters then pronounced the two Big Bear children dead, and requested three helicopters to land at the scene.

EMS airlifted three people with critical injuries to trauma centers. Moreover, they transported two others with minor injuries by ambulance to local hospitals.

A witness said the two adult women occupied the pickup truck. Subsequently, the two young girls that rode in the backseat became badly injured. 

Moreover,  she saw an unknown male running away from the accident and into the desert, however, she wasn’t sure if he had been in any of the vehicles.

According to the CHP incident logs, callers advised the dark-colored sedan passed on double yellow and driving recklessly prior to the crash.

Further investigation to determine the cause of this fatal SR 18 accident is ongoing.
