Pedestrian Margaret Urueta Struck and Killed by Van in San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA (January 26, 2019) – A woman killed in a hit-and-run a few blocks from City Hall on Thursday has been identified by police.

59-year-old Margaret “Peggy” Urueta was identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as the pedestrian who was hit and killed on Jan. 24 by a hit-and-run driver on Santa Clara and 10th streets in San Jose.

Urueta was walking east on East Santa Clara Street in a crosswalk about 12:35 a.m. when she was hit by a van traveling south on North 10th Street, according to San Jose police.

The driver did not stop and has not been identified.

Police have released surveillance camera footage of the suspect vehicle, which is described as a white full-size van, possibly a Ford, with no markings and dark-colored rims. There is damage to its right front end, hood and headlight, according to police.

Urueta’s family members held a vigil Saturday night at the intersection where the collision took place. Brenda Urueta, one of Margaret Urueta’s seven daughters, described her mom as “a really pure spirit.”

“She suffered a lot through her life but always looked you in the eye,” Brenda Urueta said Monday. “She adored us, her daughters. She was poor and homeless and suffered a lot but she was always helping other people.

“It’s just terrible that someone would do this to her.”
