Bicyclist Fatally Struck by SUV on Modoc Road and Encore Drive in Santa Barbara

 
SANTA BARBARA, CA (July 5, 2019) – A vehicle fatally struck a 54-year-old Santa Barbara man on bicycle early Friday morning.
 
The crash happened around 12:39 a.m. at the intersection of Modoc Road and Encore Drive, about a quarter mile South of Hollister Avenue.
 
According to the CHP, a westbound 2003 Ford Explorer hit the cyclist outside of the bike lane, driven by 48-year-old Monique Martinez of Santa Barbara. The impact ejected him onto the pavement.
 
Santa Barbara County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies responded to the site along with the CHP and AMR paramedics. Paramedics preformed life-saving measures on the man, but he succumbed to his injuries.
 
Police revealed the victim, whose name has not yet been released, did not have a helmet on at the time of the accident. His bicycle did not have any lighting devices or reflectors.
 
CHP officers evaluated Martinez and found not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
 
Neither Martinez nor her three passengers were injured in the crash.
 
Modoc Road and surrounding roadways were closed for several hours while officers and crews worked on the scene.
 
Investigation of this crash is still ongoing.
