Horrifying DUI Crash on Rural Road Left 2 People Lifeless [Tempe, AZ]

Maria Rangel and Jesse Ruiz Killed in DUI Crash on Rural Road in Tempe

Tempe, AZ (November 27, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, 31-year-old Maria Rangel and 32-year-old Jesse Ruiz died in a crash on Rural Road.

Reportedly, a Ford Mustang, allegedly involved in street racing at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, was attempted to be stopped by officers near Rural and Terrace roads. 

The vehicle, driven by 32-year-old Derek Glasscock, evaded the officers and subsequently crashed.

Tragically, both passengers lost their lives in the crash. Rangel died at the scene, while Ruiz passed away at a hospital. 

Glasscock, the suspect, is believed to have been impaired and driving at approximately 153 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle.

The crash resulted in the Mustang going airborne, colliding with a power pole and two palm trees before landing. 

One of the victims was ejected, striking a palm tree and landing about 80 feet away, ultimately succumbing to her injuries at a hospital. Another male passenger died at the scene.

Following the incident, Glasscock, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to a hospital and subsequently released into police custody. He now faces two counts of manslaughter. 

Police are still waiting for a blood draw to return from testing for possible charges related to DUI.
