2 Hut in Hit-and-Run T-Bone Crash in Wilmington
WILMINGTON, CA (April 18, 2019) – Two people were injured in a hit-and-run broadside collision Wednesday afternoon near Gulf Avenue and West Opp Street.
According to Port Police spokesperson Rachel Campbell, the crash took place around 1:45 p.m.
It all began when an officer witnessed a green pickup truck driving erratically. The officer then began approaching the suspect, who subsequently ran a stop sign and broadsided a family vehicle.
Following the impact – per a surveillance camera footage – the suspect bolted out of the car and fled on foot.
The officer pulled over and checked on the family of five inside the overturned vehicle.
Soon after, paramedics arrived and transported the mother and father to a nearby hospital with injuries. The woman was described to be about 50 years old. Three children, who authorities say are under the age of 10, escaped harm.
Meanwhile, the driver remains on the loose, but police are confident in identifying and locating the suspect.
Car accidents happen at a split second and can happen to anyone. Be on the lookout for any reckless drivers. Paying attention to your surroundings, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and driving at a safe speed limit are ways to minimize the dangers of crashes. Keep these tips in mind.
