Fatal 15 Freeway Rollover Crash Reported in Baker
BAKER, CA (June 14, 2019) – Two people died in Wednesday’s single-vehicle accident on the 15 Freeway near Barstow.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 29-year-old man from Barstow driving a 2000 BMW convertible was heading north on the freeway. CHP officers say the car was traveling in the No. 1 lane at a high rate of speed as it approached another vehicle ahead traveling at speeds of 70 mph.
The BMW driver tried avoiding the slower-moving vehicle by turning the wheel to the right; however, the driver lost control and the BMW traveled across the lanes of traffic.
According to a CHP release, the BMW traveled in the open desert and rolled down a dirt embankment. It subsequently struck a barbed wire fence and overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on its wheels.
The male driver and his male passenger sustained fatal injuries when the car burst into flames.
In the investigation, officers learned that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.
The coroner has yet to release the identities of the victims.
We would like to send our sincere sympathies and condolences to the friends and family of the victims.
