SAN RAFAEL, CA (July 21, 2019) – One person was killed and another was critically injured in rollover crash on Highway 101 early Sunday morning.
 
The crash happened around 3:40 a.m., on Highway 101 at Smith Ranch Road. CHP officials said a Ford Expedition was traveling north when it veered up an embankment for unknown reasons. The SUV then overturned, ejecting both the driver and passenger who were not wearing their seat belts.
 
A light pole was located down on the freeway upon officers arrival.
 
The male driver suffered fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. However, there has been no update on her current condition.
 
The crash closed three lanes of the highway for a time but two lanes remained open.
 
It is currently unknown if speed or intoxication was a factor in the crash. CHP officials are still investigating the incident.
