Woman Dead in Wrong-Way Highway 111 Crash in El Centro

EL CENTRO, CA (December 9, 2019)—An 82-year-old woman died in Thursday’s a wrong-way collision on Highway 111 near East Aten Road.

According to reports, the California Highway Patrol received multiple calls around 5:23 p.m. about a wrong-way vehicle. Callers reported seeing a 2017 Toyota traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway from Evan Hewes Highway.

Minutes after, CHP responded to another call about a driver colliding head-on with a 2003 Ford truck driven by a person out of Brawley.

Authorities pieced together the details, learning that the aforementioned Toyota plowed into the Ford in the No. 1 lane of the highway.

At the scene, authorities found the Toyota in the center median and the Ford near the right shoulder. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the 82-year-old woman, who they learned had been driving the Toyota. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.

The Ford driver suffered a fractured leg due to the collision.

Investigators determined that both drivers had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Impairment has been ruled out as a possible factor and the identity of the fatal victim will be released since the collision remains under investigation. However, police did not release any other information.

Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the bereaved family and friends of the victim during this heavy time.
