Woman Dead in Wrong-Way Highway 111 Crash in El Centro
EL CENTRO, CA (December 9, 2019)—An 82-year-old woman died in Thursday’s a wrong-way collision on Highway 111 near East Aten Road.
According to reports, the California Highway Patrol received multiple calls around 5:23 p.m. about a wrong-way vehicle. Callers reported seeing a 2017 Toyota traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway from Evan Hewes Highway.
Minutes after, CHP responded to another call about a driver colliding head-on with a 2003 Ford truck driven by a person out of Brawley.
Authorities pieced together the details, learning that the aforementioned Toyota plowed into the Ford in the No. 1 lane of the highway.
At the scene, authorities found the Toyota in the center median and the Ford near the right shoulder. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the 82-year-old woman, who they learned had been driving the Toyota. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Ford driver suffered a fractured leg due to the collision.
Investigators determined that both drivers had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Impairment has been ruled out as a possible factor and the identity of the fatal victim will be released since the collision remains under investigation. However, police did not release any other information.
