Fatality Reported in Santa Barbara Train Accident on the Olive Mill Road Off-Ramp
SANTA BARBARA, CA (November 19, 2018) – A woman died after she was struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Santa Barbara on Friday, November 16.
According to a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office news release, at around 7:10 a.m., the woman was walking northbound on the railroad tracks near the southbound Olive Mill Road off-ramp near Highway 101 when the southbound train struck her.
The engineer noticed the woman on the tracks when the train came around a curve and activated the horn and braking system. However, the train didn’t stop in time and struck the woman, who sustained critical injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office is in the process of identifying the victim and will then notify her family. The official cause and manner of her death are pending while investigators wait for toxicology and lab results.
Officials are still investigating the circumstances that caused the accident.
The Pacific Surfliner was delayed for about two hours following the incident.
