2 Drivers Arrested After DUI Fatal Crash on Pioneer Drive in Bakersfield
Bakersfield, CA (February 20, 2024) – Police arrested two drivers following a crash on Pioneer Drive that killed a 29-year-old woman early Saturday morning.
The California Highway Patrol reported that officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at Pioneer Drive and Dennison Lane on Feb. 17, 2024, around 1:35 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers determined that the crash involved two vehicles and resulted in one fatality.
A preliminary investigation by the CHP revealed that a 33-year-old Bakersfield man, driving a 2017 Chevrolet westbound on Pioneer Drive east of Dennison Lane at an undetermined speed, veered to the left for unknown reasons.
He crossed the double solid yellow center lines, causing the front of the Chevrolet to crash into the front of a 2015 Honda, driven eastbound by a 29-year-old Bakersfield man at an undetermined speed.
Both vehicles ended up blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes of Pioneer Drive after coming to rest on their wheels.
A 29-year-old woman, riding as the right front passenger in the Honda, suffered severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Two other passengers in the Honda were transported to Kern Medical.
Authorities arrested the Chevrolet driver, Gabriel Coronel, for felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
Brayden Aragon, the Honda driver, faced misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.
