Victor Gonzalez Jr. Perishes in Multi-Car Wreck on Highway 101 Near Emma Wood State Beach

VENTURA, CA (January 2, 2019) – A rollover crash that involved several other vehicles on Highway 99 near Emma Wood State Beach early Sunday claimed a 22-year-old man’s life.

The crash was reported around 4:30 a.m. Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the fatal victim as 22-year-old Victor Gonzalez Jr., of Oxnard.

Authorities believe Gonzalez was the sole occupant of a red Honda SUV that was heading southbound on the highway. For unknown reasons, Gonzalez’s Honda veered to the right, traveled onto the right shoulder and lost control. His vehicle subsequently traveled back into the southbound lanes and overturned, ejecting him from the cabin.

A blue Toyota, driven by a 30-year-old Oxnard woman, and a blue Volkswagen, driven by a 50-year-old Santa Barbara man, were traveling behind the Honda when the incident occurred. The Honda ended up striking Gonzalez and his Honda before traveling in a southwesterly direction and striking a silver GMC Acadia that was stopped on the right shoulder. The Volkswagen also struck Gonzalez before it traveled southwest and overturned down an embankment.

The Toyota driver suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized at Ventura County Medical Center while one Santa Paula resident in the silver GMC suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Ventura Hospital. Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed the freeway for several hours and snarled traffic in the afternoon.
