Man Killed in Crash After Suspect Runs Red Light While Fleeing Police in Tumwater

Tumwater, WA (November 17, 2024) On Thursday, a 33-year-old motorist died after a tragic vehicle crash on Tumwater Boulevard.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the fatal incident happened on Tumwater Boulevard Southeast.

Reports say that the 33-year-old motorist lost his life when another driver ran a red light while fleeing from police.

Authorities say tat the incident began when a deputy attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle for speeding, but the driver accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph to escape. The deputy followed but lost sight of the vehicle as it turned west onto Tumwater Boulevard Southeast.

Additionally, when the deputy arrived at Capitol Boulevard, he discovered the aftermath of a crash involving the fleeing driver and an innocent motorist. The uninvolved driver tragically died at the scene, while the suspect’s car flipped and struck a tree before coming to a halt.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who was apprehended immediately, expressed regret, repeatedly saying he fled to avoid getting another speeding ticket. He claimed he had received multiple tickets and feared his license would be suspended if he got another. Authorities confirmed that the suspect showed no signs of impairment when evaluated at the hospital.

After receiving minor medical treatment, the suspect was booked into Thurston County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and eluding police. His bail was set at $1 million. The crash investigation shut down the roadway for approximately 6.5 hours as police worked to clear the scene.
