Vincent Giovannini Involved in Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Eureka
EUREKA, CA ( January 22, 2019) – Tuesday morning, a man was struck and killed by a car as he was walking along Highway 101.
California Highway Patrol reported the collision occurred around 6:30 AM on Highway 101 near Humboldt Hill Road exit.
Officials stated that 31-year-old Vincent Giovannini of Eureka was driving his 2002 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Humboldt Hill Road attempting to merge into traffic when he looked over his shoulder and struck the victim.
It was determined that the victim had been hit by multiple vehicles including a semi truck. The driver of the truck called 911 and cooperated with police.
Due to the collision, both lanes on the highway were closed for a period of time as crews assessed the scene. The northbound lanes remained closed for several hours.
The County Coroner’s office has identified the pedestrian but his identity has not been released pending notification next of kin. CHP encourages anyone with information to contact (707) 822-5981.
Officer Paul Craft with the CHP said it is unclear if the investigation will result in any criminal charges. Drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the crash following preliminary investigation.
