3 Big Rigs and Pickup Truck Involved in Deadly Crash on Highway 99 in Galt
GALT, CA (January 28, 2020) – Two men died in a chain-reaction crash Tuesday morning in Sacramento County.
The crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. on Highway 99 near Ayers Lane south of Twin Cities Road.
CHP officials said a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling in front of a 2008 Freight tractor-trailer in a northbound lane of the highway. The Silverado slowed down as traffic started backing up just north of Ayers Lane. Instead of slowing down or stopping, the tractor-trailer slammed into the pickup truck.
The impact pushed the Silverado forward, rear-ending a slow-moving big rig, according to the CHP. The chain-reaction crash continued as a third tractor-trailer was also hit from behind.
As a result, the driver of the Silverado, a 33-year-old man from Galt, and his passenger, a 20-year-old man, also from Galt, both died at the scene.
Paramedics transported the driver of the first tractor trailer, a 43-year-old Sacramento man, to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The other two big rig drivers were not injured.
Officials did not rule out alcohol and drugs as factors in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
