Two Men Seriously Injured, One Airlifted to Hospital after Fiery Crash on Highway 101 Near Madrona Beach
Olympia, CA (August 20, 2021) – On Wednesday evening, a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Madrona Beach led to fire and left two men seriously injured.
The crash occurred on August 18 on Highway 101 near Madrona Beach and the State Route 8 interchange in Thurston County.
According to the report, the 18-year-old male driver from Shelton started listing into the left lane of Highway 101. Then, the driver attempted to get back into the right lane however, he overcorrected.
As a result, the vehicle went off the highway’s right shoulder, fell down a 30-foot embankment before smashing into a tree.
Washington State Patrol spokesperson Robert Reyer said that witnesses saw smoke coming from the vehicle. Authorities arrived at the scene and found the car fully engulfed in fire.
Fire crews were able to put out the fire and extricated both the driver and the passenger from the wreck.
Furthermore, the impact of the crash prompted the closure of the roadway for three and half hours. However, it has since been reopened.
Fiery Crash in Thurston County
An ambulance took the 21-year-old male passenger from Shelton to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia with broken ribs. Meanwhile, medics transported the driver to Olympia Regional Airport before airlifting him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Reyer reported that the driver sustained severe injuries and extensive burns over his chest and arms but is expected to survive.
Later, authorities found out that the driver was driving under the influence. However, there have been no charges made as of writing.
