Troy Nelson and Jessica Nelson Die, Ryan Langerud Uninjured after Tree Fall in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 24, 2019) – A North Dakota couple in town for a trade show was killed after a tree toppled onto their rental home at Santa Monica Boulevard and Santa Barbara Street Monday morning.
According to news reports, the couple was asleep upstairs in a vacation rental home when the 75-foot pine tree toppled onto the house around 6:00 a.m.
Troy Nelson and Jessica Nelson were killed by the fallen tree. They were believed to be sleeping in a bed on the upper floor when the accident happened.
According to San Diego Police Department, the Nelsons were visiting San Diego from Grand Forks, N.D., after attending a trade show for promotional products and apparel company, Trojan Promotions. They found the home through a home sharing app, said police.
Ryan Langerud, the brother of Jessica Nelson, was reportedly downstairs when the tree fell and was unharmed.
Authorities are investigating this incident further and believe large gusts of wind might have caused the tree to fall onto the house.
Crews arrived to find that the gargantuan tree had caused significant damage to the structure, preventing crews from reaching the victims immediately inside. They were also dealing with a gas leak due to the incident.
A follow-up investigation is being conducted.
