Triple Fatality in 2 Separate Collisions in Sutter County
SUTTER COUNTY, CA (December 19, 2018) – Two separate crashes near Highway 99 and West Riego Road claimed three people’s lives Monday.
One collision befell along Highway 99, just north of West Riego Road. Just after midnight, a 55-year-old Berry Creek man heading southbound in a 2004 Chevrolet drifted off the road and struck a call box. The vehicle then veered across the lanes and into the northbound side of the highway and was hit by a 2015 Volkswagen.
The woman operating the Volkswagen was hospitalized and the Berry Creek man suffered fatal injuries.
Hours later, around 4:30 p.m., two drivers were killed according to California Highway Patrol.
News reports say a 47-year-old Yuba City woman heading eastbound on Riego Road, just east of Highway 99, drifted into the right shoulder before her Hyundai Tucson traveled back onto the roadway in the wrong direction. The woman’s Hyundai struck a Ford F-350 head-on, causing minor injuries to its 18-year-old driver.
Shortly after, a 53-year-old man from Roseville, who was traveling behind the Hyundai, plowed into the Hyundai following the head-on collision. Both he and the 47-year-old Yuba City woman died at the scene.
An investigation is underway to determine the ultimate cause of these two collisions.
