Woman Dies in Sumner DUI Wreck
SUMNER, WA (January 31, 2019) – A woman was killed, and three others were injured Tuesday following a multi-vehicle DUI crash on Sumner Tapps Highway East near 162nd Avenue East.
According to Det. Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, one car was traveling on Sumner Tapps Highway East and slowed down to make a left turn at 162nd Avenue East when it was struck from behind by a speeding motorist.
The impact of both cars pushed the car attempting to turn into oncoming traffic and striking a third vehicle. Reports say the third car was traveling at speeds of about 40 to 50 mph.
A 53-year-old woman from Sumner who was attempting the turn was killed in the crash. Her male passenger suffered critical injuries along with two teens in the third car, who were moderately hurt.
The 57-year-old driver who caused the crash appeared to be intoxicated.
Authorities believe speed, darkness and alcohol all played a role in the collision. The driver will be facing charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.
