Steve Licon Dead, Michael Callahan Arrested in DUI Crash on 15 Freeway Near Nichols Road
LAKE ELSINORE, CA (April 8, 2019) – A California Highway Patrol sergeant died Saturday in an alleged DUI accident on the 15 Freeway near Nichols Road.
According to reports, Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon pulled a Chrysler driver over for speeding around 4:26 p.m. Yet as he was writing a citation, a gray Toyota Corolla struck him.
Reports identified Michael Callahan, 36, as the errant driver of the Corolla who struck Licon’s motorcycle before hitting him in the freeway’s right shoulder.
According to Capt. Mario Lucio, California Highway Patrol Inland Division Special Services Commander, the significant impact caused major injuries to Licon, whom paramedics brought to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.
However, despite life-saving efforts, the 27-year CHP veteran officer succumbed to his injuries.
Although the investigation is in its early stages, authorities have surmised that Callahan was most likely impaired at the time. Subsequently, officers booked the Winchester man on suspicion of murder and driving drunk.
In the investigation, authorities have also uncovered evidence that demonstrates gross negligence during both and before the collision. However, more investigation of this deadly crash is underway.
To those hoping to donate to the Licon fund is more than welcome to contribute online.
We would like to take this time to express our condolences to the friends and family of Steve Licon.
