Shirley Ashbaugh Perishes, Cameron Luoma and Rebecca Garwood Hurt in Highway 395 Collision Near Milepost 223
COLVILLE, WA (July 12, 2019) – A Highway 395 collision near Milepost 223 left an elder dead and three people injured Wednesday.
According to Washington State Patrol, a northbound vehicle crossed the center line for unexplained reasons and struck 81-year-old Shirley J. Ashbaugh‘s vehicle.
Per a statement, Ashbaugh tried avoiding the imminent collision by steering toward the shoulder but failed; both cars collided, causing her fatal injuries as a result of the impact.
Three occupants in the other vehicle required treatment, including a 2-year-old child. While paramedics brought the youth to Mount Carmel hospital, medics airlifted 21-year-old Rebecca Garwood to Sacred Heart Medical Center and 24-year-old Cameron Luoma to a hospital for further treatment.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time while crews worked to clear the wreckage. However, the roadway has since reopened.
At this time, troopers have not yet determined the ultimate cause. However, officials plan to explore this case further.
