Shannon Schmidt Hurt, Eriberto Barba Escapes Harm in Big Rig Collision on Highway 101 Near TV Tower Road
CUESTA GRADE, CA (February 22, 2019) – A woman and a child were injured Wednesday when their SUV collided with a big rig on Highway 101 near TV Tower Road.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. when 44-year-old Shannon Schmidt was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon in the No. 2 lane. As Schmidt switched from the No. 2 to the No. 3 lane to pass a slower-moving automobile, her Yukon collided with the back of a big rig.
California Highway Patrol officers have yet to determine at what speed Schmidt was driving. Her SUV became wedged underneath 23-year-old Eriberto Ramirez Barba‘s semi-truck, which was traveling at speeds of about 35 mph.
A 9-year-old child inside the GMC Yukon suffered moderate injuries in the crash and Schmidt suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from the wreckage. Both she and the child were brought to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Barba was not injured.
An ongoing investigation of this collision underway.
