2 Dead in Vehicle-Motorcycle Wreck in Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, CA (January 3, 2019) – Authorities are investigating a fiery crash that claimed the lives of a female driver and a male motorcyclist on South Raitt Street near West McFadden Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
Santa Ana Police Department officers were summoned to the scene around 1:30 p.m. after responding to reports of a crash.
Police reported that witnesses said a male motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and T-boned a red Dodge Charger, whose driver was attempting to make a U-turn. Per Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department, both vehicles ruptured into flames, drawing nearby witnesses’ help.
Bertagna noted that the son of the woman operating the Dodge Charger was one of the people trying to put out the fire.
The 40-year-old woman, who was extricated by Orange County Fire Authority officers, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition where she died from her injuries. The 35-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, despite help from bystanders who pulled his motorcycle off him.
Authorities are now investigating the ultimate cause of the crash, such as whether speed played a role or whether the woman was making an illegal U-turn. Raitt Street was closed for several hours due to the collision.
