2 Dead in Vista Pedestrian Accident on State Route 78 near Mar Vista

VISTA, CA (June 20, 2023) – Sunday night, authorities arrested Sandra Ortiz after a tragic pedestrian crash on State Route 78.

The incident occurred at about 6:10 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of State Route 78, just east of Mar Vista.

According to the Vista Fire Department, who is the mother of the children, pulled over on the highway since a piece of luggage fell from the vehicle.

Then, the children exited the car to take the luggage. However, an oncoming vehicle hit them.

CHP officials confirmed that the 10-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl deceased victims were passengers from a green GMC Yukon SUV that pulled over to the right shoulder.

CHP revealed that the children “were on foot in the eastbound traffic lanes of SR-78” when they were struck by a white Nissan Sentra traveling east.”

After the crash, the 41-year-old driver of the Sentra stayed at the scene.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested the 33-year-old Yukon’s driver, Ortiz of Vista, “for felony charges related to this incident, including driving under the influence (DUI), gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and child endangerment.”

Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
