Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Car in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 1, 2019) – A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 52 near Genesee Avenue Thursday morning, shutting down all eastbound lanes of the highway.
Authorities are trying to determine why the pedestrian was walking in the eastbound lanes of the highway around 4:30 a.m. Around this time, the driver of the Toyota struck the 51-year-old woman, causing her fatal injuries.
Officials arrived and pronounced the unidentified pedestrian dead at the scene. The 73-year-old woman operating the Toyota stayed at the collision site, where investigators questioned her for details.
News reports stated that shortly after the pedestrian crash, another driver subsequently struck the first car; however, neither driver sustained any injuries.
Per a California Highway Patrol report, investigations revealed that the fatal victim bore a backpack and flip flops distributed by Sharp Memorial Hospital. With this detail, investigators are looking into whether the female pedestrian was a patient there.
Authorities issued a Sigalert around 4:45 a.m. for all eastbound lanes of the highway. Two hours later, crew reopened all lanes to commuters.
