Male Bicyclist Hospitalized in San Diego Crash
SAN DIEGO, CA (November 27, 2018) – A 29-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized Sunday night after being struck by a motorist on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Kearny Villa Road.
The crash happened in the 8600 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard around 11:05 p.m.
According to San Diego Police Officer John Buttle, a 33-year-old man driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla eastbound on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard was traveling in the designated right-turn lane when he veered into the bike lane and struck the 29-year-old bicyclist.
Per reports, the cyclist was not wearing a helmet and did not have any lights on the bike. Paramedics arrived and brought the injured man to a nearby hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
The Toyota driver stayed at the scene and was questioned by officers, who later determined that intoxication was not a contributing source to the collision.
When driving at night, it’s important to play it safe whether you’re a driver, pedestrian or bicyclist. It’s best to wear the proper protective gear and use reflectors when riding a bicycle at night. Drivers are reminded to be alert and conscious of their surroundings in case pedestrians or bicyclists are meandering the area.
