Deadly Wrong-Way Collision in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 15, 2019) – A 44-year-old man from Maine perished at the scene of a wrong-way crash Sunday on the 5 Freeway near Highway 163.
According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the 44-year-old man from Lebanon, Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 4 p.m. crash.
The wrong-way driver who died crashed his black Nissan Versa into a white Volkswagen minivan after coming from the Highway 163 ramp in the wrong direction and crossing all lanes of the 5 Freeway. The vehicle then struck the van before slamming into the center divider.
Both drivers were trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters. The other driver — a 67-year-old man from San Diego — was critically injured and brought to UCSD Medical Center.
Alcohol was not believed to be a contributing source to the collision.
