Sammie Franks Injured, Gabrial Fernandez Arrested in Highway 12 Crash
Calaveras County, CA (April 17, 2021) – On Thursday, 55-year-old Sammie Franks was injured while police arrested 34-year-old Gabrial Fernandez of Modesto, in a DUI crash on Highway 12.
The crash occurred at about 5:20 p.m. at the Burson Road intersection near the Camanche Reservoir.
Fernandez was southbound on a Nissan approaching a stop sign when at the same time, Franks was eastbound on a tow truck.
Authorities said the crash is still under investigation if Fernandez stopped at the stop. However, he still violated the right of way when he drove into the tow truck’s path, which did not have a stop sign.
Unfortunately, the tow truck’s front crashed with the right side of the Nissan.
Afterward, the tow truck went out of control and crashed into the support structure of the overhang in the front of Burson Market. The support also collapsed.
The Nissan then crashed with a Chevrolet pickup parked beneath the overhang and a parked Toyota pickup
Lastly, the Nissan went northbound and left the roadway, where it struck a barbed wire fence and finally stopped in the field.
Unfortunately, Franks incurred major injuries. He was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Meanwhile, Fernandez was flown to Memorial Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Once released from the hospital, officers booked Fernandez into the Calaveras County Jail on suspicion of DUI causing injury.
