The incident happened around noon time when officers were responding to an unrelated report of a vehicle on fire that was visible from the 5 Freeway. According to reports, a white sedan collided with the rear of a blue sedan on the southbound 5 freeway near the Sacramento International Airport.
The person killed was a male in his 50s sitting in the right rear side of the blue sedan. Seven others were injured and suffered minor to major injuries, according to the Woodland Office of the California Highway Patrol.
Inferring from a preliminary investigation, authorities believe that the unrelated report regarding the fiery vehicle caused a traffic slowdown. Distracted driving was said to have played a role in the crash. No other details were reported.
