State Route 78 Crash Injures Roger Villanueva and His Family
Vista, CA (March 29, 2021) – On March 20, Roger Villanueva, his wife, and other relatives were injured in a DUI crash on State Route 78.
The accident took place at about 7:35 p.m. near the Melrose Drive exit.
“We were just all happy as can be having spent time with family. It was an awesome feeling until I happened to notice a white car in the rearview mirror,” Roger said.
Apparently, an overspeeding motorist was approaching their vehicle at literally break-neck speed, zipping around vehicles as she swerved from lane to lane.
“I thought the driver would hop into the fast lane, but that didn’t happen,” Roger added.
The bomb-like impact threw his wife’s 2008 Honda Pilot SUV and rolled it a couple of times. Afterward, the vehicle overturned four or five times as it rolled down the embankment and finally landed on its roof.
“I was literally hanging upside down, and all I could hear was screaming voices,” Roger recalled. “Is everyone OK? Is everyone alright?” he shouted. “All I heard was crying and moaning.”
Roger was thankful good samaritans helped them got out of the car.
Roger’s 12-year-old niece was thrown out into the middle of the road while his daughter landed in the brush,” Canales said.
Canales, also from Vista, instantly pulled over and his wife called 911, he scrambled to help the victims.
Furthermore, Canales and another motorist crawled on top of the vehicle and forced open the driver’s door. Roger passed his wife, Vivian into their hands. Then, they broke a window and pulled the rest of the family to safety.
Officers Arrest the DUI Suspect
Meanwhile, the other car’s driver, Stephanye Camacho, a 19-year-old Escondido resident, got out of her heavily wrecked 2015 Hyundai Sonata. She didn’t appear to incur major injuries.
Officers arrested her at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked her into jail.
Moreover, authorities continue to investigate the incident. Though they mentioned she faces felony charges, including felony DUI causing major injury.
Roger incurred neck, shoulder, and leg pain, while his wife, Vivian, suffered severe chest pain, a sore arm, and breathing difficulty. They refused hospitalization at the time of the crash.
Rescuers took the four other passengers to different medical centers with head trauma, broken bones, cuts, bruises, and various other injuries.
On the other hand, responders airlifted Chloe Lubas, the girl who was ejected onto the roadway.
Despite Roger’s family’s bad luck, he is still grateful. He said “The CHP officer who questioned us said we were very, very lucky because a crash like that could easily have been fatal.”
One of Roger’s stepdaughters, Irene Williams, who wasn’t in the crash, created a GoFundMe account with a target of $75,000 to help with the family’s medical bills.
