Roberto Garcia Fatally Struck by Car on Highway 1 Near 41st Avenue
SANTA CRUZ, CA (January 3, 2019) – A 38-year-old Watsonville man was hit and killed by a motorist Monday while attempting to flee police officers on Highway 1 near 41st Avenue.
The California Highway Patrol got in touch with Roberto Garcia around 5:45 p.m. who was in a disabled car on the southbound lanes of Highway 1. News reports say that his vehicle was blocking the No. 2 lane and he displayed signs of intoxication.
Before officers were able to conduct a DUI investigation, Garcia reportedly took off running across the southbound lanes, hopping over the median, and into the northbound lanes where he was hit by a Subaru Crosstrek, driven by a 46-year-old San Jose woman.
Officers and emergency personnel arrived on scene to render aid to Garcia, but despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead around 6 p.m.
CHP believes alcohol and drugs did contribute to the crash. Although the San Jose woman was shaken up, she was neither harmed nor cited in the crash.
This is devastating news to those who knew Roberto Garcia. Our law firm would like to express our condolences and hope you find support and strength around you.
