Robert Bruno Jr. Dead After Falling Off Pine Valley Creek Bridge on 8 Freeway to Avoid Collision
GUATAY, CA (February 8, 2019) – A Good Samaritan fell to his death Wednesday morning after trying to avoid an imminent crash on the 8 Freeway at Pine Valley Creek Bridge.
The incident was reported just before 5:15 a.m. on the westbound 8 Freeway. A 32-year-old Campo man crashed his Ford F-150 pickup truck against the side of the bridge, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow.
Moments later, a Subaru Outback motorist pulled over at the crash scene to assist the driver, and so did a 33-year-old Campo man driving a Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck. However, as both motorists tried to assist, a 24-year-old male from Campo plowed his Kia Sorento into the Chevy truck under unknown circumstances, and at least one of the cars slammed into the wrecked vehicles.
CHP officers were dispatched to the scene to investigate. As they began piecing together remnants of the crash, they learned that the Subaru driver was nowhere on site.
By 6:45 a.m., the San Diego County Medical Examiner was called to the scene after officials discovered a body under the bridge.
Garrow surmised that the Subaru driver possibly ran to the south road’s edge and hopped over the bridge rail in an attempt to avoid the collision and fell to his death – about a 400-foot deep ravine. His body was uncovered in the snow-covered canyon by a chopper during the search.
Robert Verlin Bruno Jr., of Jacumba Hot Springs, was identified as the fatal victim in this incident. News reports say he was on his way to work as an installation manager at Life Deck in San Diego when he stopped to assist the driver and a baby, who was also in the truck. Of those involved, the driver and infant in the Ford were the only ones injured.
Speed and fog are believed to have contributed to this multi-vehicle crash.
Our hearts break for the family and friends of Robert Verlin Bruno Jr. This is tragic news and we’d like to express our support and sympathies to all affected.
