DUI Wrong-Way Crash on 5 Freeway at McCardle Flat Road Kills Two
LAKEHEAD, CA (September 13, 2019) – A man was arrested following a fatal DUI wrong-way crash early Friday morning in Lakehead.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on northbound 5 Freeway, just south of McCardle Flat Road near Delta Road. According to the CHP, a 2017 Dodge pickup truck was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the freeway when it collided head-on with a 1992 Ford truck.
As a result, the 29-year-old male driver of the Ford and his 30-year-old female passenger died. However, their names were not immediately available. The driver was from Mount Shasta, and his passenger lived in Oregon, the CHP said.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported the driver and passenger of the Dodge to Mercy Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The wrong-way driver was identified as Ramon Martinez Sadiel, 36, of Redding.
During the investigation, CHP officers discovered Sadiel had recently moved from Miami to Shasta County and was engaged in illegal cultivation and distribution of marijuana.
CHP requested assistance from the Shasta Interagency Narcotic Task Force and the CHP’s Investigative Services Unit.
Agents and investigators went to Sadiel’s residence. They arrested and booked him in the Shasta County Jail on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI with a $2,000,000 bail.
