Rafael Puerta Detained Following Major-Injury Two-Car Crash on Coldwell Avenue at North 9th Street
MODESTO, CA (April 24, 2019) – A Modesto woman suffered critical injuries Sunday evening following a two-car crash at Coldwell Avenue and North 9th Street.
The accident occurred around 5 p.m. The woman was operating a Honda Civic westbound on Coldwell Avenue when a northbound Jeep Cherokee broadsided her vehicle.
According to Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear, the Jeep Cherokee driver blew through a red light at the time.
Authorities identified Rafael Puerta as the Jeep driver whom bystanders chased and detained after the accident before officers arrived.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Honda driver sought treatment at a local hospital for her critical injuries.
Puerta, on the other hand, faces charges and arrest on suspicion of auto theft and burglary. According to Bear, the 29-year-old allegedly stole the keys and Jeep from a Modesto resident.
