Peter Stump Dies After Crash on Interstate 10 in Tempe

Tempe, AZ (November 12, 2024) –  40-year-old Peter Stump died in a crash on Interstate 10.

Investigators identified Peter Stump, a 40-year-old man from Chandler, as the victim who died in a crash on Interstate 10 near Tempe on Monday night. 

The incident occurred while DPS troopers were attempting to detain another man.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to reports of a man in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Warner Road around 8:30 p.m. 

When troopers tried to apprehend the suspect, the man ran across the lanes, jumped over the median, and was struck by a car traveling on the eastbound side.

Shortly after, a scuffle broke out between the trooper and the suspect. At the same time, a separate collision between two unrelated vehicles resulted in the death of Stump, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, DPS spokesperson Warrant Trent confirmed. 

Drivers of both vehicles sustained injuries in the crash.

Troopers transported the suspect, a 34-year-old man from Glendale, to a hospital for treatment. His name remains undisclosed, but officials say he will face charges after his release.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 remained closed through the night and reopened around 3 a.m.
