Pernell Whitaker Fatally Struck by Driver on Northampton Boulevard Near Baker Road
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (July 17, 2019) – A former world champion boxer died Sunday following a pedestrian accident on Northampton Boulevard near Baker Road.
Loved ones are remembering Pernell “Sweetpea” Whitaker, a father, a fourth-time world champion, a Norfolk-native and trainer.
The 55-year-old man died around 10:04 p.m., when a call reached dispatch regarding an accident. Reports say a pickup truck hit Whitaker as he walked across Northampton Boulevard. Unfortunately, the former leading-class boxer died at the scene.
According to residents, the area is a high-trafficked, fast-moving road with multiple businesses nearby. Tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles use Northampton Boulevard to get to their destination.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time while crews worked to clear the wreckage. However, the roadway has since reopened.
As far as the motive, police believe neither speed, alcohol nor drugs played a role, yet they’re investigating the crash more closely. Following the crash, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigations.
