Wrong-Way Collision in Pacifica Turns Deadly
PACIFICA, CA (February 11, 2019) – A wrong-way collision early Saturday on Highway 1 near Clarendon Road claimed two people’s lives and left three others with injuries.
The wrong-way crash was reported at approximately 4:15 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol.
A Toyota Prius was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 1 when it collided with a northbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Two people inside the Toyota Prius, believed to be passengers, were killed and the driver was transported to San Francisco General in critical condition.
News reports say the impact was so forceful, the Prius’ front tire was pushed into the cabin where the two passengers were killed. One of the passengers, said to be a man in his 20s or 30s, was ejected from the Toyota and was pronounced dead at the scene and the other passenger said to be a woman in her 20s or 30s was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Two male occupants of the Chevrolet pickup truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized, as well.
Authorities are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. It took officials more than five hours to clean up and reopen the northbound lanes.
A follow-up investigation of this crash is underway.
