Orlando Tapia Dies in Highway 99 Crash Near Woollomes Avenue Following 3-Car Wreck
DELANO, CA (December 18, 2018) – A 19-year-old man from Delano was fatally struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 near Woollomes Avenue Monday night.
The events leading to the crash are still under investigation, but authorities have surmised thus far that the deadly incident unfolded moments before. Orlando Tapia was involved in a three-car crash when his Nissan collided with a Mazda and a Volvo in the southbound lanes, officers confirmed.
The Mazda became disabled in the No. 1 lane and its driver exited the vehicle. Meanwhile, Tapia left his Nissan and began crossing the lanes toward the center median to speak with the Mazda driver when a Toyota driver approached the collision scene, noticing the disabled Mazda ahead. The Toyota driver tried taking evasive action and swerved but struck the Mazda driver and 19-year-old Tapia.
Tapia, of Delano, died in the crash and the Mazda driver suffered major injuries to his right leg. He was brought to Kern Medical Center, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible factors in the crash.
