Officer Among 2 Hurt in Thousand Palms T-Bone Crash at Varner Road
THOUSAND PALMS, CA (December 6, 2019)—A broadside collision Thursday morning at Varner Road and Monterey Avenue left a sheriff’s officer and a driver injured.
According to reports, the Riverside County Sheriff’s vehicle crashed around 10:50 a.m.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the officer’s vehicle had its patrol lights on while traveling north through the intersection with Varner Road. Suddenly, a 2006 Chevy Cobalt broadsided the vehicle as the officer tried making a left on Varner Road.
Due to the severity of the accident, the sheriff’s officer suffered major injuries and the 17-year-old Chevy driver complained of pain to his head.
According to the California Highway Patrol, paramedics brought him to Eisenhower Medical Center; however, it’s unclear whether a 17-year-old girl and a baby inside the Chevy were hurt.
In the investigation, officers learned that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor. Yet, where the fault lies is still being determined.
Being aware of our surroundings is essential when driving. We’ll seldom find ambulance trucks, fire engines and police vehicles with their sirens and lights on. However, we never see them coming until it’s too late. In addition, always keep your music at a reasonable audio level to ensure what is happening outside your car. Pay attention to your surroundings by observing other drivers.
