Deadly Airplane Crash in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, CA (January 30, 2019) – A pilot was found dead Tuesday and a passenger was severely injured in a private single-engine plane crash near Highway 76 and Canyon Drive.
Dispatchers responded to a call around 7:15 a.m. from a woman reporting that she saw the wreckage of a plane on the hillside near Highway 76.
When officials and crews arrived, they learned that the pilot was already dead, and the passenger was still alive after having suffered nearly 10 hours with serious injuries. The passenger was extricated and airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of serious injuries.
The incident happened just about two miles west of the Oceanside Municipal Airport. The single-engine Piper PA-28 took off from Oceanside Airport around 9 p.m. Monday before it crashed just after takeoff, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA officials are working to determine what caused the plane to crash.
