SAN MATEO, CA (December 22, 2019) – A male teen was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he struck and critically injured a pedestrian Sunday night, in San Mateo.
Witnesses called police and said they saw multiple young people running from a car. That car allegedly struck a pedestrian on North Humboldt Street and collided with parked vehicles.
Around 6:45 p.m., police arrested the suspect, 18-year-old Nathan Farris of San Mateo, in front of his home on suspicion of marijuana DUI, hit and run causing serious injury, and other charges.
The pedestrian was airlifted to a trauma center and is expected to survive despite suffering serious injuries, police said.
An investigation into this crash is ongoing.
While pedestrians have some responsibilities in trying to stay safe on the road, ultimately there is little they can do if a driver ends up approaching and hitting them. As drivers, always make sure to follow all rules of the road and pay close attention to pedestrians. Make sure to obey all signs at the intersection and make sure that nobody is crossing the street before driving through.
