Natalya Martinez Killed, David Willis and Dianna Navejar Involved in 5 Freeway Collision Near Pacific
OLYMPIA, WA (February 5, 2019) – A 16-year-old Hermiston High School junior was killed when an alleged impaired driver struck the vehicle in which she was in on the 5 Freeway near Pacific Saturday.
The crash happened when Natalya Martinez and her mother, Dianna Navejar, were on their way to Seattle to meet family for a KISS concert. Navejar reportedly experienced a flat tire on the freeway and decided to get the vehicle towed instead of changing the tire on the side of the road.
Navejar’s brother, David, and her son were in another car and also pulled over behind them to wait with them for the tow truck. All four of them decided to wait in David’s car, which was when a Ford Focus, driven by David Willis of Poulsbo struck David’s Nissan Altima on the shoulder.
Willis and his 8-year-old female passenger were transported to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. Navejar was also hospitalized, and her 14-year-old son and David were not harmed.
Tragically, Martinez suffered fatal injuries in the 1:45 p.m. crash.
Investigators believe Willis was impaired at the time and will be booked into jail on investigation of reckless endangerment and vehicular homicide. Authorities added that he was probably attempting to pass up another car by using the right shoulder but smashed into the Nissan Altima.
Our hearts break for the family and friends of Natalya Martinez. We’d like to send our sympathies to those mourning this devastating loss.
