Car Struck and Killed Motorized Tricycle Driver in Ceres

 
CERES, CA (May 01, 2019) – A man riding a motorized tricycle was fatally struck by a car in the area of Service Road and Moffett Road in Ceres Sunday night.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported at about 8:45 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the trike rider lying in the roadway and a Lexus stopped on the north shoulder of Service Road, west of Moffet Road.
 
An initial investigation determined that the Lexus driver, 32-year-old Yadira Flores of Ceres, was headed east on Service Road, east of Collins Road, at about 40 mph. As she approached the eastbound trike, Flores failed to see it and struck its back portion.
 
The CHP said the trike rider was sent airborne and hit the Lexus’ windshield at the roof line, continued over the top breaking the sunroof, then struck the trunk before falling to the ground. Flores reportedly continued east and knew she had hit something but didn’t know what. It was then that she turned around the found the trike rider lying in the road.
 
Ceres police administered life-saving measures. At 8:55 p.m., AMR paramedics declared the rider dead at the scene.
 
The motorized trike was taken to the CHP Modesto office. Officials said it appears to be homemade as they cannot find the manufacturer’s name. The trike has a motor and gas tank, but it has no pedals, lights or reflectors. There also is no indication in the report whether the rider was wearing a helmet.
 
The investigators said that it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to see by the Lexus driver. The motorized trike was described as a recumbent trike, with the rider sitting below the hood line of the Lexus, out of the driver’s sight.
