Michael Gardoski Dies after Car Crash on State Route 161 in Pierce County

Pierce County, WA (January 19, 2024) – On Friday, 58-year-old Michael Gardoski died after a crash on State Route 161 last month.

Gardoski was driving his 2009 Chevrolet Aveo north on state Route 161 on Dec. 6. As he neared Sanitary Fill Road, a 43-year-old man, driving a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta west on Sanitary Fill Road, made a left turn onto southbound state Route 161, resulting in the Chevrolet colliding with the Jetta. According to a Washington State Patrol media release, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. that day.

Following the collision, the Jetta halted in the center turn lane of state Route 161, while the Chevrolet ended up in a ditch on the east side of the route. The crash led to a partial road blockage for 16 minutes, as stated in the release. Gardoski succumbed to his injuries in the hospital this week, whereas the Jetta’s driver sustained no injuries. Both vehicles incurred damage.

The release noted that the Washington State Patrol attributed the crash to the Jetta’s failure to yield the right of way. Additionally, the release confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the incident.
